Humboldt Times, Volume XLIX, Number 22, 27 July 1897

Death of Mrs George Graham. Yesterday at 10:45 a. m, Sarah J, wife of Graham quietly passed away at tbe family residence, No 825 Second street. In her death Humboldt county has lost another of her piopeer women who came here in the early fifties ready to put up with the inconveniences of a lumber camp that they might assist their husbands in building up a home in the shadows of the great redwoods. Mrs. Graham was born of English and Scotch parentage in Belfast, Ireland, on September 10th, 1822, and was consequently almost 75 years of age at the time of her death. When she was 11 years old her parents decided to immigrate with their family of 7 and try their fortune in the new world. Embarking in the fall of 1833, they arrived at the mouth of the Delaware in December, and proceeded in sleighs up the frozen river to Providence, Rhode Island. Soon after the family moved from Providence to Natchez, Mississippi, where she met and married George Graham. In the summer of 1853 she came to Eureka on the schooner Page, Captain Phillips, and has since lived here continually. The course of her life in Humboldt is to well known to need comment. From the date of her arrival until prevented by her recent illness no sick chamber was too lowly or contagion to deadly to deter her from visiting those who needed help. Her's has been a life of usefulness and her death is deeply felt and lamented by all those who knew her. She leaves to mourn her loss a husband and two daughters, Mrs. E J Mullen and Mrs. John Livingston, and a large circle of friends and acquaintances. The funeral will take place to-morrow at 10 a m, from the family residence, 825 Second street. Interment will be made in Myrtle Grove Cemetery.
