Thomas changed his middle name to Bennett, son of General Thomas Francis Meagher and Catherine "Bennie" Bennett.

Thomas was baptized in the Waterford parish cathedral on March 30, 1854, sponsors were his Uncle Henry Meagher and Aunt Hannah Quan.

Age 18 Thomas emigrated to the U. S. and applied for admission to the West Point Military Academy. It was denied for failure to pass an entrance examination. With his stepmother's name on a 2nd application he was accepted.

Sept 1,1872. Age 18 yrs, 5ft 8 & 1/2" and 20/20 vision. He was dismissed four months later, January 1873, for academic failure being deficient in French and Mathematics.

He m. Mary Lavinia Carpenter Feb. 6, 1884 in New York City.

After the 1900 census he worked for the Fellowship of Eagles in Manila, Philippine Islands. He died from pneumonia after an attempted suicide. The funeral was a tribute worthy of the respect in which he was held in the American community of the Philippines. Present were representatives of the United States Army, the Insular Constabulary, Representatives of the Philippine Assembly, the Manila Lodge of Eagles with their members and regalia, the local branch of the Knights of Columbus, the Municipality of the City of Manila, and the American business community. The residents paid respect to the remains as the cortege passed through the streets of the old historic Spanish city. Wreaths adorned the casket of the deceased and the most prominent was a wreath depicting an Irish Harp, worked in flowers with the figures with a simple card attached bearing the words from the Clan-na-Gael.
