He was a native of Tattnall County, a member of the Royal Pines Holiness Church in Columbia and a 24 year veteran of the Army.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Opal S. Cowart of Columbia; four sons, Larry Cowart of Quantico, Va., Ronnie Cowart of Columbia, Gary Cowart with the Marines in Okinawa and Jerry Cowart of Reidsville; a daughter, Miss Debra Lynn Cowart of Columbia; his mother, Mrs. Lucy Cowart of Reidsville; four brothers, Olin, Elmer and Carl Cowart, all of Reidsville, and Arthur Cowart of Columbia; two sisters, Mrs. Callie Peeples of Brunswick and Mrs. Mary Nell Wilson of Columbus, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at McCall-Trapnell Funeral Home in Reidsville with burial in the Reidsville City Cemetery with full military honors.
