Smith Hopkins Grant, 86, who died, at his home in South Sangerville May 23, was born in Frankfort, Maine, where he lived until he was nine years old. He then came to Dexter to live with a sister, Mrs. L. D. Packard. At the age of sixteen he came to South Sangerville to work for M. C. Bailey on the farm where he spent the last years of his life and where he died. From boyhood his life was spent in South S.angerville, except for a few years in Michigan and Greenville in early manhood. As long as his health and home duties permitted, he worked winters in the woods, usually driving a team. His love of horses and of men and his deep satisfaction in a good, day's work made this a very congenial employment, and in the years of failing health, he never tired of telling his sons and grandsons of those early experiences. To meet and talk with men who had known that life was one of his greatest pleasures. i
He was married November 17, 1877 to Lizzie Gray of Sangerville. Five children were born to them, four of whom are living. The second daughter, Mrs. Alson Goodwin, passed to a higher life less than three month before him, her death being the first break in a large family.
Mr. Grant was man of sterling intergity and untiring energy. He was always kind and obliging, making many friends, for he instinctively saw and appreciated the best in people. He was devoted to his home and family, loving, considerate and loyal.
During his years of failing strengt and sight, he was tenderly cared for by his wife and his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Aylmer Grant and was amused and cheered by the children in the home. He was a member of South Sangerville Grange and was interested in all good things.
Surviving him are his widow, Mrs, Lizzie Grant, two sons, Alymer and Ray, two daughters, Mrs. Alton Bridge and Mrs. Willis Jackson twenty grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
