I think his name is actually John M. W. WELLS. Here's the records I've found - it's often difficult to distinguish between the letters "I" and "J" in the old handwriting. Did the same problem occur when the tombstone was ordered?

1) 1850 Census St. Louis MO - John M. W. WELLS b. NJ dry goods merchant;

2) 1860 Census Westport MO - I (or J) M. W. WELLS 29 born NJ merchant, Louisa R. WELLS 25 born MO, S. Harris WELLS 3/12 born MO;

3) 1870 Census Kansas City MO - John M. W. WELLS 40 born NJ wholesale produce;

4) 1880 Census Watrous, Mora Co, NM - J M W WELLS 51 born MO merchant, L. R. WELLS wife 42 born MO, S. H. (Samuel Harris) WELLS 20 born MO, J. P. WELLS 18 born MO.
