Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in Waterloo, New York, he was a well respected lawyer at the start of the Civil War when he enlisted in the Union Army and was commissioned a Captain of Company A, 44th New York Volunteer Infantry. Promoted Major in January 1862, he was wounded in actions at Hanover Court House, Virginia, in May 1862 and was returned to his home in Buffalo, New York. After recovering from his wounds he received authority to recruit volunteers and was appointed Colonel in command of the 116th New York Volunteer Infantry in September 1862. Sent to the Union Department of the Gulf, he saw action at Plain Store, Louisiana. During the Siege of Port Hudson, Louisiana, while leading a charge on Confederate forces Colonel Chapin was killed in action on May 27, 1863. For his service, he was posthumously promoted to Brigadier General US Volunteers.
