Roy Saye enlisted in the Army on Thursday August 16, 1917 and served as a Sargeant during World War I. "H" company, 61st Infantry, 5th Division. When his company was cut off by the enemy, he crawled through the trenches all night through enemy lines to get back to the command post and get help. He returned to the states on March 7, 1918. After his death in 1962, his family received a commendation from President John F. Kennedy.

Roy William Saye, 65, World War I veteran, died yesterday at Bay Pines Veteran's Hospital. A native of Athens, GA, he came to this area 19 years ago from Athens. He was a retired mechanic for Waldron Pontiac, St.Petersburg.
He was a member of Clearview Baptist Church. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Hettie Saye, St.Petersburg, a son Eddie Saye, three daughters, Mrs. Virginia DeVore, La Crosse, Wis., Mrs Geneva Harling and Mrs. Evelyn Hawkinson, both of St.Petersburg; two brothers, Rev. R.N. Saye, Athens, and Fred W. Saye of Gainesville.
