Son of Simon Alexander and Elizabeth Oliver Cummins.
Served in the 84th Kentucky militia regiment in the 1840s of which his brother Noah H. Cummins served as colonel.
Elijah served as a Confederate conscript soldier in Co. A, 1st Battalion Infantry, Texas State Troops during the War Between the States in 1864.
Elijah's son James Alexander Cummins served in Co. C, 22nd Texas Cavalry, C.S.A.
Elijah was a pioneer settler of Fannin County, TX., moving there from Lyon County, KY. about 1858, with his family and Oliver in-laws.
