Dorothy Mae Baker, daughter of Neal and Catherine (Dirkson) Baker, was born July 25, 1922 in Rock Valley, IA. As a child she lived with her family in Volga, SD but graduated from Washington High School, Sioux Falls. In 1940, Dorothy married Pershing Elofson on June 7, 1942 in Valley Springs, SD. Following Pershing's death on December 1, 1956, she worked at the S & L store in Sioux Falls. She moved to Sioux Falls in 1965. She was the first female to serve as a Constable with Minnehaha County for several years. Dorothy married Jay Wheeler in Rapid City, SD on March 4, 1978. Following Jay's death on December 15, 1978, she returned to Sioux Falls. She worked as a hostess for Smitty's Pancake House and Perkins Restaurant before retiring in 1997 after 27 years of service. She was a former member of the VFW Auxiliary and attended First Lutheran Church. Dorothy was an elegant lady who enjoyed bowling, loved to play cards and cherished spending time with her family.
Survivors include her daughter, Karen (Stanley) Gehrke, Beaver Creek, MN; 3 grandchildren, Karmen (Paul) Thompson, Lead, SD, Michael Gerhrke, Beaver Creek, Ronda (Greg) Skorr, Jasper, MN; 6 great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Ethelyn Gulseth, Brandon, SD; and 7 step-children.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Mark Gehrke; her parents; a brother, Fred Baker; and two sisters, Mariand Hemingson and Lorraine Davis.
