Dr. Robert Grier LeConte came from a distinguished line, his father having been a pioneering entomologist and his grandfather Robert Cooper Grier a US Supreme Court Justice. Dr. Robert LeConte was a noted surgeon, a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania and a member of the Council of the Academy of Natural Sciences. He was also a fellow of the American Association of Clinical Surgeons and was on the staff of the Pennsylvania, Children's, Bryn Mawr, and Germantown hospitals. He was a member of the Philadelphia Academy of Surgery, the Philadelphia Pediatrie Society, and the National Tuberculosis Association. He had served in World War I. In 1916 he married his childhood friend the recently divorced Mrs. Antonio Yznaga Stewart.
