After a long battle with illness, William Franklin Fretwell, very prominent Augusta County farmer and former member of board of supervisors, died at ten o'clock yesterday morning at his home in New Hope.

Born April 3, 1856, in New Hope, Mr. Fretwell. Churchman, public official, banker, cattle dealer, and merchant, spent his entire life in the community of his birth, and was deeply interested in its religious and business lite.

His active business life, his cordial friendship for all classes of people, his ever-ready helpfulness to those in need, and his constant effort to avoid controversy made him one of the most loved and admired citizens of the community.

As a representative of his district on the supervisory board of the county, and as cashier of the New Hope bank, he gained constant and undivided commendation. As a business leader of his community he was trusted and sought after by a large number of people.

His passing will be felt deeply by many who were numbered among his wide circle of friends and acquaintances.

For a number of years he was a leading spirit in the religious and moral work of the neighborhood, serving for a long term as a steward in the New Hope Methodist Church. South, and for a time was a honored elder Mt. Horeb Presbyterian Church

Mr. Fretwell served as a member of the Augusta board of supervisors from 1920 to 1924, and did not offer for reelection because of his failing health.

He also was interested, beside county projects in concerns in Staunton, one of these being the Farmers and Merchants Bank. He was a director in this institution.

In his immediate family Mr. Fretwell leaves his devoted and faithful wife, who was Miss Hattie E. Brown, before marriage, and the following son and daughters: W. E. Fretwell, of Philadelphia; Mrs. J. Henley Walker, of Richmond; Mrs. Russell F. Barger, of Crimora; and Miss Mattie Belle and Miss Anna I. Fretwell, both of New Hope. He also is survived by two brothers and two sisters.

The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at three o'clock from the Mt. Horeb Presbyterian Church.
