James L Sanborn, Jr, son of James L & Pamela Andrews (Small) Sanborn, Sr was born in Machiasport, ME, 28 Feb 1847. On 22 Jan 1864 James, 16 years old, enlisted as a Private in the Union Army, Company B, 31st Infantry Regiment Maine Volunteers. James enlisted with his brother, Gilbert who was 19 years old. They mustered in Augusta, ME on 08 Mar 1864 and left for Washington D.C. on 18 Apr. When they arrived Alexandria, VA they were joined to the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Div, 9th Army Corp and the brothers were then separated. James' Company marched on to Bristow Station, VA on 04 May. Then, on 06 May, his company marched to the Battle the Wilderness and their losses were heavy. The Battle of the Wilderness was the 1st battle of Lt Gen Ulysses S Grant's Overland Campaign against Gen Robert E Lee. This battle was inconclusive in results but led to their 12 May engagement in the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. And, that day James was wounded and he died from these wounds, two days later on 14 May 1864. The Battle of Spotsylvania Court House was the 2nd major battle of Lt Gen Ulysses S Grant's 1864 Overland Campaign of the American Civil War. This battle was also inconclusive, but the costliest battle of the campaign with 32,000 casualties on both sides, after 20 hours of unabated fighting, in what may have been the most ferociously sustained combat of the Civil War.
