"Pioneer Driver of Stages Dies
One of Spokane's first stagecoach men, Fred Tripp, died Sunday at age 87, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Nellie Garretson, in Dubois, Idaho, where he had lived the last two years.
Mr. Tripp came to Spokane in 1887 and established one of the first stage lines between Spokane and Walla Walla. He operated a livery stable at College and Madison until about 12 years ago. The building still stands, reminder of "the good old days" of surreys and buckboards.
Ten years ago Mr. Tripp moved to Dishman, where he lived until going to make his home with his daughter in Idaho. He is survived also by a son, Robert, of Seattle, one granddaughter and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Tripp will be received tonight by Thornhill's where funeral arrangements are being made."
