Lincoln Hess

Lincoln Clarke Hess, 78, died on Sunday, April 5, 2009, at Heartland of Marietta.

Born June 19, 1930, to the late Whitney and Barbara Bardill Hess, he had a happy childhood growing up in Marietta. As a teenager, he worked at the "Piplate," the Hess' family restaurant on Third Street; and at school, he played trumpet in the band and also lettered in track and football.

In the Air Force, he worked on B-36 bombers and played football for the Carswell AFB team as they won the National Armed Services Championship in 1951. With the rank of sergeant, he returned to Marietta, where he worked for many years at Alfco-Rokeby, D.A. Kuhn, and others before retiring in 1995.

"Ace" was an excellent bowler and enjoyed hunting, motorcycles and pinochle. After 25 years, he started playing trumpet again and joined the Wood County Recreation Band and the Doug Hess Orchestra.

Although he was never married and had no children, he treated his brother's children as his own. A visit from Uncle Lincoln was always special and his generosity was unsurpassed. He never forgot any of his nieces and nephews or their children and they will never forget his kindness.

He is survived by his two brothers, Douglas Phelps Hess of Vienna, W.Va., and Bardill Hess of Akron, Ohio.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday (April 16) at 3:30 p.m. at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with full military rites. Family will greet friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Marietta College Girls Softball Team.
