James, the son of John T. Metoyer and Nora L.L. Metoyer of Natchitoches LA, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on January 6, 1965 in Shreveport LA. He arrived in Vietnam and was assigned to Company M, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On August 14 while on patrol near the village of Phuoc Thuan in Binh Son District the Marines engaged in a brief fire fight with the VC and four men were wounded, one of the casualties was LCpl Metoyer who was treated at the Battalion Aid Station and returned to duty.

Two weeks after being wounded by the enemy,while on a squad combat patrol, near Tan Phuoc hamlet, in Binh Son District one of the men accidently discharged his weapon; the projectile hit LCpl Metoyer resulting in his death.
