Charles Lewis SMITH was the oldest son of Tryon Yancy SMITH and Lucy Ann GARNETT. His mom Lucy died on Christmas Eve, just after he had turned 9 in November. His dad remarried a year later. Charles attended college and then taught school for a while.

In 1892, he married Willie Maxwell WESSON of Como, MS. During the 1890s, he worked with two other brothers at Smith Bros Grocery on East Main Street. He and Willie had 6 children, all born in Caldwell Co: Clara Mai SMITH -never married, Howard Garnett SMITH who married Minnie Belle LESTER also of Caldwell Co, Charles Wesson SMITH, Tryon Yancy SMITH, Wallace Greene SMITH, and Reginald Lewis SMITH.
