Obituary of Clara Fern Taylor
October 17, 1934 – August 3, 2009
Clara Fern Taylor, age 74, of Eastland, passed away Monday, August 3, 2009, in Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas, surrounded by her loving family. Funeral services will be Thursday, August 6, 2009 at 10:00 AM at the Daugherty Street Church of Christ in Eastland with Larry Roberts and Ernie Christie officiating. Interment will be at 2:00 PM Thursday at Landreth Cemetery near Santo, Texas.
Fern Taylor was born in Sylvester, Texas on October 17, 1934 to Frank George White and Josie Middleton White. She attended school in Sylvester, Texas in the primary grades and then Newman High School in Sweetwater. She graduated from Mineral Wells High School, but always remained close to her school friends in Sweetwater. Fern attended Hardin-Simmons University before the married Joe W. Taylor in Abilene on April 4, 1954.
Fern enjoyed working in several professional fields. She worked for the Eastland schools for twenty years before retiring. After retiring from that position, she developed the patient representative program at the Eastland Memorial Hospital. She was honored by the Eastland Chamber of Commerce in 2008 for Outstanding Service to the Community of Eastland.
Her work in the Church of Christ of Eastland was joyful priority for Fern and Joe. Fern found particular reward in working with children and the elderly.
Fern and Joe loved to travel with friends and family. They had traveled throughout the nation to almost every state. Fern enjoyed entertaining and was a gracious hostess. She was a gifted cook and seamstress. Many remember having Fern for a teach at school or in Sunday School.
Fern is survived by her husband of 55 years, Joe W. Taylor, her son, Clay Taylor, her granddaughters, Kirstie and Kelsie Taylor all of Denver City, Texas; her brother and his wife, Frank and Sheila White of Lubbock, Texas; her two surviving sisters, Kathryn Fraley and her husband Bill Fraley of Spring, Texas, and Kay Taylor and husband Marvin Taylor of Abilene; seventeen nieces and nephews and her sister-in-law Barbara Royal and her husband Larry.
Fern will be remembered by all who knew her for her high-energy level, her sense of humor and her love for her church, her family, her friends, and her willingness to help anyone she met.
Services are officiated by Larry Roberts, Ernie Christie, and song leader Bill Culverhouse. Pallbearers are Charles Walker, Ralph Frank, Bill Dolen, Mike Lewis, Billy Thompson, and Steve Herod. Honorary pallbearers are Minton Hanna and Milton Underwood.
