Obituary:
One of Fairfield's original police force members, Houston Ray Flowers, 66, died Tuesday, July 27 in Fairfield.
He retired in 2009 after 33 years of service with the Fairfield Police Department.
Mr. Flowers was born November 30,1943 in Sherman to Floyd and Gracie Griffith Flowers. He married Nova Mullen on August 17, 1968, in Arlington, and the couple moved to Fairfield in 1972 with son Randy.
After graduation from Navarro Junior College, Mr. Flowers worked as a reserve deputy for Freestone county for three years, beginning in 1973.
He joined the Fairfield police force in 1976, back when officers had to work part-time out of the Freestone County Sheriff's Department.
When the City of Fairfield established its own police department in January 1980, Flowers served as chief along with three other officers.
He left police work briefly in 1981 to work for D&C Disposal Well Inc. of Fairfield, but returned to the FPD in March of 1983. He was later promoted to assistant chief of police.
Over the years, Flowers served at every position at the Fairfield Police Department except as a lieutenant.
His favorite hobby was restoring antique tractors from the 1940s and 50s. Even while working, he managed to complete the restoration of 17 vintage tractors.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Services were conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 29 at Calvary Baptist Church in Fairfield with Rev. Terry Skinner officiating, assisted by Rev. Paul Gauntt and Rev. Deward Mullen.
Burial was at Antioch Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were his nephews, Greg Flowers, David Flowers, Benny McFarlin, Danny McFarlin, Marvin Mullen, Dana Mullen, Clint Minchew and Wayne Bonner.

Two grandchildren, Nicholas and Erin Flowers; and one great-grandson, Baxton Flowers.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Floyd Flowers; and a grandson Zachary Flowers.
