Born in Helsingfors, Finland. He was one of Ashtabula's most loved citizens. Since the news went out that he was ill, his name has been on many tongues, not only of young people, who were more closely associated with him, but practically everyone was concerned and anxious to know of his condition. The word that he was dead came as a great shock to the entire community. He graduated from a six year public school and had five years of 8-year Lyceum (High School). He completed a six-year course in Helsingfors Military Band school and studied theory and harmony under O. Kotilainen, Helsingfors. He had one year course in orchestration and conducting at Brandenburg Conservatory, Berlin; studied conducting under Bruno Kittel (First conductor, Royal Dramatic Theatre, Berlin); studied theory under Arne Reunch, Berlin; studied harmony under Alfred Wooler, Buffalo; studied voice under Mr. Ojanpera of Helsingfors, (Finland's greatest baritone), and Paul Knupfer of Berlin, Germany's greatest bass. After his graduation in Helsingfors, he took post graduate work in Berlin and New York. He was at one time bandmaster with the A.B. Miller Greater Shows; bandmaster with the St. Louis Amusement Company; Director of the Pittsburgh Steel Products Company Band at Monessen, PA; organizer and director of the Harbor School band, the High School orchestra, the elementary school orchestra; leader of the Finnish National choir; director of choir and orchestra in the First Presbyterian church; organizer and director of the School Band at Andover and Kingsville; was for five years director of Humina Band. On two different occasions, he organized concert bands and made triumphal concert tours of Northern Europe. He played before King Oscar II of Sweden; the President of Finald, and participated in eight successful concerts before the late Czar Nicholas II, of Russia. He had the further honor of playing before three of our own presidents, Taft, Roosevelt and Harding. In 1922 Mr. Wahlstrom came to this city from Monessen, PA to become director of instrumental and vocal musical organizations in the Harbor Special schools. He work was not confined to the schools alone but included churches and civic community bodies. He also gave private lessons on various orchestral instruments. It was due to his patient and untiring efforts that the Harbor School band won national prominence in various contests and is widely known as one of the nation's very best high school bands. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ashtabula, the Exchange Club, the Chamber of Commerce and the Elks Club at Monessen, PA. Those left to mourn their great loss are his wife and five daughter, Mrs, Edward Stenroos, Marie, Charlotte, Myra and Airi, all of this city.
