After their marriage in 1844, James and his wife Sarah built a Greek Revival farmhouse in Cass County, Michigan. They were active abolitionists and their home became a stop on the Underground Railroad. Along with many of their Quaker neighbors they set aside land for Freedmen to settle in Cass County.
