Off. Schumann responded to a call of an armed deranged man @ 635 W. Lafayette Ave. The man had already shot a store manager and two children. Upon his arrival Off. Schuman saw the man sitting on the steps and took a position in a store across the street to get a tactical advantage to apprehend the man. The man saw Off. Schumann and fired his rifle across the street with the bullet piercing the plate glass window and mortally wounding Off. Schumann. The suspect was killed by responding backup officers. Off. Schumann had 3 years and 7 months of service with the department and was survivied by his wife and child.
