ELIAS E. CARROLL
With deep regret we chronicle the death of one of Chariton's well known citizens, Mr. Elias E. Carroll, which occurred at his home, 414 South Eighth street, on Wednesday, November 12, 1930, shortly after the noon hour, at the age of 79 years, 5 months and 16 days.
He had not been in robust health for a few years but was able to be about and attend to his accustomed duties until a few days before his death, when he suffered a severe attack of Lumbago, but his condition was not considered serious and death came suddenly.
Largely attended funeral services, conducted by Rev. E. L. Stone, were held at the family home on Friday afternoon at two o'clock, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Chariton cemetery. The floral tributes were profuse and beautiful and bore testimony to the high esteem in which deceased was held.
Elias E. Carroll, son of Benjamin and Sarah Carroll, was born in Appleton, Licking county, Ohio, on May 26, 1851. He came with his parents to Monroe county, Iowa, and settled near Melrose in the year 1850.
On February 1, 1882, he was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Lever, at Knoxville, Iowa. Two children came to bless their home, Della Ruth Kirkhart and Grace E. Carroll. Mrs. Kirkhart gave her life with the birth of her second child, Della Martha, who was brought up as a daughter in the Carroll home.
Mr. and Mrs. Carroll and family moved to Montezuma, Iowa in 1892, where they resided seven years. During his residence in Montezuma Brother Carroll was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal church of which he has continued a faithful member. In 1899 Mr. Carroll and family returned to Lucas county, where he has since made his home.
During his residence here of over thirty years he has won the admiration and regard of all with whom he has come in contact by his strict integrity and upright life. He was a kind, indulgent and loving husband and father, and a splendid neighbor. His demise has brought sadness to many hearts and the sympathy of the entire community will be extended to the bereaved ones.
Those left to await the glad reunion in God's eternal home are the wife and daughter, Grace, one grandson, Clement Carroll Kirkhart, a brother, Albert, of Los Angeles, Calif., a sister, Mrs. Cinda Cornell, of Creston, Iowa, and many other relatives and friends.
