Winthrop J. Blanchard died at 32 years of age. He was the son of Alonzo and Sarah E. Woodward Blanchard. Alonzo was a sea captain so the family traveled. As a result, Winthrop was born in Georgia, and his sister Clara M. was born in Sicily (about 1859).

According to the 1860 US Census for Lyme, Grafton County, New Hampshire, Alonzo was born in Maine (about 1833 in Seasport, Waldo County, to Alfred and Margaret Clewley Blanchard) and Sarah was born in New Hampshire. She was the daughter of Ralph and Adeline Clark Woodward. Alonzo and Sarah were married 6 Sep 1854 in Chelsea, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.

By 1870 Winthrop's additional siblings were Lizzie, 9; Freddie, 7; and Alfred, 5, all born in New Hampshire. Also in 1870 Sarah's father, Ralph Woodward, 62, was living with the Blanchard family in Lyme.
