Benjamin was a Civil War Veteran and survivor of Andersonville and Florence, S.C. prisons. He bought land in Iowa and built a house around 1869 in Big Grove Twp. Benton Co., IA where his g-granddaughter now lives. His obituary says the large number of floral tributes testified to the esteem in which the deceased was held.

His children were Louis D., Elza, Ruth, Dollie (died young), Cora, Effie, & Benjamin,, Jr. (died young). His first wife was Margaret Fisher from Ohio and his second wife was Alzina Richards McIntyre.
