Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born George Pforr, he served in the Civil War as a Private in Company K, 1st New York (Lincoln) Volunteer Cavalry under the name "Charles W. Anderson." He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at the Battle of Waynesboro, Virginia on March 2, 1865. His citation reads simply "Capture of unknown Confederate flag." His Medal was awarded to him on March 26, 1865. He was one of seven 1st New York Cavalry soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the Civil War (the others being Private Warren Carman, Sergeant William Morris, Lieutenant John R. Norton, Private Peter O'Brien, Captain Edwin F. Savacool, and 1st Lieutenant Clifford Thomson).
