A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-six in Lancaster County but as "William Platt" February 13, 1865, mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. B, 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry (89th Pa). He was captured April 7, 1865, at Farmville, Virginia, when his horse fell into a ditch and pinned his right leg. He was paroled two days later and discharged by general order to date July 8, 1865.
He moved to York County after the war and In 1890 was living in Draco in the southern part of the county. Cause of his death is listed as a "gastric carcinoma" with "cardiac dilatation" a contributing factor.
