Carl died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2010 at Illini Restorative Care, Silvis.
Carl was born June 6, 1924, in Zeigler, Ill. He graduated from King's Point Merchant Marine Academy in 1941. During World War II he served in both the Atlantic and Pacific war zones, enlisting June 30, 1944 and released February 14, 1945. He married Barbara McMenamy on Jan. 23, 1949, in Centralia, Ill.
He retired as manager of the engineering department from Travelers Insurance Company, St. Louis.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Barbara; children (and spouses), David Jones (Diann), St. Louis, Deborah VanderBeke (Marc), East Moline, Stephen Jones, St. Louis, Philip Jones, Bluemont, Va., Carol Hartman (Bob), St. Louis, and Russell Jones (Lynn), Centennial, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. He also is survived by sisters, Betty Downing, Ruth Ann Frost and Sue Rohner, all of Centralia, and Mary Woolbright, Springfield, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Tom and Jim.

Carl was also known to be skilled at woodworking. At a young age he made a wagon from a crate to wheel his baby sister Sue around in. He made ship models and humorous items like his outhouse bank that would blow up when a coin was dropped in.
