The following was added by the creator of this memorial:

Civil War Confederate Medical Officer. Twenty-five year old Daniel W. Shaw postponed his civilian life as a physician of Moore County to volunteer in the service of his native state of North Carolina on June 3, 1861. Enlisting in Carthage, his company named the "Moore Independents" was later designated Company H, 26th Regiment North Carolina Troops . As a Private, he served with this command until being commissioned a Assistant Surgeon on October 21, 1861. Consequently, he transferred to the Field and Staff of the 26th. A month later, he died from the effects of measles/fever while a patient of the General Hospital in Carolina City.

He was a son of Charles and Mary Shaw.
