Philip Armel was a farmer. In 1869 he arranged to rent the farm to his son Henry while he and his wife Mary moved to a house they bought in the town of Pleasant Unity. Philip and Mary had 10 children: Rebecca, Paul, John W., Sarah (m. Frederick Saxman), Mary (m. Peter Saxman), Catherine (m. James Smith), Henry, Susan (m. Mathias Saxman) , Elizabeth and Peter.
