Leroy was born Leroy Luther Miller, the son of George W. Miller & Maude Sprenkle Miller. His mother died as a result of his birth and he was adopted and raised by his maternal grandfather, Henry H. Sprenkle. He took the Sprenkle surname.

Leroy married Anna May Cassat, 12 Dec 1918, Hanover, York Co., PA. They had two children: Catherine Elizabeth (Wentz) & John Leroy Sprenkle.

After Leroy's death, Anna married Clarence D. Stine, 23 Sep 1948, York Co., PA.

According to the application for his military marker, Leroy was an Apprentice Seaman in the Naval Reserve Force. He served aboard the Ship Norfolk. Leroy enlisted 3 May 1918 and was honorably discharged 1 Jul 1918.
