LAWNDALE - Ruth Spurling Beam, 95, of 2614 Philadelphia Road, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009 at Hospice at Wendover in Shelby.

Mrs. Beam was born April 10, 1914 in Cleveland County, to the late Monroe Franklin Spurling and Selvia Hoyle Lattimore Spurling.

She was a faithful member of New Bethel Baptist Church in Lawndale having served as church clerk, church historian, WMU President, Sunday school teacher, and choir member. She is a former member of the Cleveland County Historical Society, Lawndale Women's Club, Piedmont Home Demonstration Club and the Upper Cleveland Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband and business partner of 56 years in the poultry industry, David Elliott Beam; brothers, Thomas G. Spurling, Charles Spurgeon Spurling, Edwin Spurling, Robert Spurling and Daniel Spurling; and a granddaughter, Laura Ashley Brown.

She is survived by her children, David Conrad Beam and wife, Rebecca Putnam, of Lake Norman and James Frederick Beam and wife, Mar-garet Owens, of Shelby; Selvia B. Brown and husband, Jim, of Lawndale; grandchildren, Julie B. Jones, Susan B. Eggers, Nancy B. Bell, Barbara A. Beam, Rick Beam, Jonathan Beam, and Caroline B. Reynolds; six great-grandchildren; her brother, Warren Spurling of Belwood and sisters, Pauline S. Miller of Charlotte and Elizabeth A. Sain of Belwood.

Visitation: The family will receive friends following the service.
Funeral: Tuesday, Aug. 25, 11 a.m., New Bethel Baptist Church, Lawndale
Burial: The body will placed in the church for thirty minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
