She was born Nov. 15, 1924, in rural Princeton, the oldest child of Daniel and Frances Calkins Hamrick. She married Ray Nelson of Oneida, on Aug. 25, 1951, in Wyanet, at Congregational Bible Church. He preceded her in death on Jan. 28, 1978.
Surviving are four children, Patty (Mark) Compton of Oneida, Dean Nelson of Oneida, Carol (Rod) Johnson of Cambridge, Jean (Kent) Barrington of Alexis; six grandchildren, Krista (Greg) Peck of Galva, Kelly Compton of Oneida, Craig Compton of Oneida, Amy Johnson of Cambridge, Alison and Tyler Barrington of Alexis; two sisters, Grace (Howard) Hjertstedt of Sheffield, Donna (Bob) Jackson of Sherrard; and one sister-in-law, Marjorie (Dick) Williams of Avon. Many nieces and nephews called her aunt Miriam. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Miriam graduated from Wyanet High School in 1942 and went on to continue her education at Western Illinois State Teacher's College. She received her bachelor's degree in home economics and biology in 1946 and started teaching that fall at the former Altona High School. Her teaching career continued for five years taking her into the ROVA consolidation and in 1951 she became a full-time farm wife.
She and Ray raised the family on their farm east of Oneida until his untimely death in 1978 when she assumed his responsibility of being father as well as mother to her young family. She continued to be an active part in the farm until recent years when declining health caused her to finally slow down a little. This was her home until the last few days.
Miriam was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Altona, where she taught Sunday school for many years as well as being involved in many groups within the church. She was also a member of Knox County Home and Community Education Association. Her family and faith were her cherished possessions, for that was what she dedicated her life to.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Altona. The Rev. Tim Anderson will officiate. Visitation will be held on Monday, Sept. 13, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Hurd Hendricks Funeral Home in Oneida. Burial will be in Oneida Cemetery in Oneida.
