Fourth of eight children, believed to be the last to be born in the sod house in Bloom Township, Osborne County.

Osborne County Farmer 1966: Alfred J. Hobbie, son of August and Mary Hobbie, was born on the family homestead south of Tipton on February 8, 1882. He passed away at Senior Citizen's Home in Cawker City on Friday, June 24, 1966, at the age of 84 years, 4 months and 16 days. On November 16, 1910, he was married to Fannie L. Elhers in Stewartsville, MO. To this union four children were born. His wife preceded him in death on April 2, 1965. He grew to manhood on the farm and continued in that profession until his retirement in November, 1963, when he and his wife moved to Tipton. In July 1964 he suffered a light stroke. He and his wife, who was in failing health, moved to the Senior Citizen's Home in Cawker City where he resided until his death. His love in life was his farm and his family. He showed this love by diligent hard work on the farm and by the love and compassionate care of his companion in her years of declining health. Survivors include his children, Wilma Reich of Downs, Marcella Kaufmann of Lucus, and Kermit Hobbie of Tipton; sons-in-law, Walter Reich and Leo Kaufmann; four grandchildren, Carolyn Reich, Don, Randy and Steve Kaufmann; a brother, Hobert Hobbie of Osborne and additional relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son, Melvin D. Hobbie who lost his life in World War II; one granddaughter, Cheryl Kaufmann; four sisters, Ella Newquist, Annie Cordel, Bertha and Emma Hobbie; two brothers, Paul and George Hobbie. Funeral services were held at the Miller Chapel in Cawker City with Rev. Carl Dietz in charge. Mrs. Harold Guhn was the organist and Miss Norma Guhn soloist. Casket bearers were Harold Guhn, Norbert Arnoldy, Clifford Houghton, and Harvey Efken. Interment was at Union Cemetery southwest of Tipton.
