Born about 1820. Son James M. GANN heads a household on Railroad St. in Columbus, General Militia District #773 (Upper Town District) of Muscogee County, Georgia, in 1900 - reports that his father was born in North Carolina, his mother in Georgia. This son's death certificate shows his parents to be William GANN & Mary ADAMS (both born in Georgia).

William GANN married 30 APR 1846 in Fayette County, Georgia, to Mary ADAMS. He married second to Martha UNKNOWN, who appears as his wife (aged 36 years, born in Alabama) on the 1880 census of Beat 1, Girard, Russell County, Alabama; with them are two children: Wiley GANN (14) & Roxey GANN (11), both born in Alabama and both working in a cotton mill. William (born Georgia, father Tennessee, mother Georgia) was hauling wood for a living, and Martha was keeping house.

"Death of Mr. William GANN. // Mr. William GANN, aged about 82 years, died at the residence of his son, Mr. J[ames] M. GANN, No. 1021 North Railroad street, at 6 o'clock yesterday morning, after an illness of six weeks of lagrippe. About two weeks ago he had a stroke of paralysis, from the effects of which his system was further weakened, resulting in his death. He is survived by five children as follows: Mrs. Roxie FOSTER of Nashville, Tenn., Mrs. Gussie MAY of Bremond, Ga., Mr. Wiley GANN, of Tallassee, Ala., Mr. B. F. GANN, of Florida, and Mr. J[ames] M. GANN, of this city. Mr GANN was a member of the Rose Hill Methodist church. He was a Confederate veteran, having been a member of a Georgia regiment. The funeral occurs at 9 o'clock this morning, conducted by Rev. Mr. THOMPSON. The interment will be at Linwood cemetery." [Columbus (GA) Enquirer-Sun newspaper, Saturday, 01 MAR 1902, p. 3.]

Entry in the Sexton's online cemetery database shows: William GANN, born in Columbus, Georgia, died 28 FEB 1902, aged 82 years, in Columbus, Georgia; interred in Section 2, Lot 854, by undertaker Bradford.

A list of lot owners for Linwood Section 2 shows that someone paid $15 on 04 JAN 1890 for city 2-854 (but that person not named on list). Others reported to be in 2-854 include: David C. SENN, buried 31 AUG 1886 (aged 17 months); and Bertha (O'NEAL) FOSTER (born 19 MAY 1899, buried 24 APR 1907). The GANN grave is marked in Lot 49 of Section D in Dolores Autry's "Historic Linwood Cemetery" book (edited by Lea Dowd et al.), Volume 2.

Evidently a grandson (probably a son of James Martin GANN): Wiley G. GANN/a (1864 -- 1942)
