Education was important to James Henry Rowan, some time before 1903 he moved his family into Nashville so the children could attend school. Later he built Reedy Branch School on his farm property, for the children of the community as well as his own, and moved back, paying the teachers himself. Second eldest daughter Alice served as Principal and teacher for a time, teaching her younger brothers, Alvin, Julian, Comer and Ralph. Uncle Ralph said she had to whip him six times in one five month term. Grandaddy was a Postmaster, the Post Office at Hill, Ga being near his home. His farm and timber properties were 2500 acres and among his investments were Coca Cola stock. He was among the first in the area to own an automobile. He tried to stop the car by saying "whoa" as he was accustomed, resulting in an embarassing ride into the ditch.
