After his parents' began their trek to the Salt Lake Valley with a company of LDS pioneers from Monroe County Mississippi, James was born aboard a Mississippi River boat along the trail.

He was the infant son of Nancy Coleman Crosby and John Henderson Bankhead of Athens, Monroe, Mississippi.

He was their fourth child and third son.
