Mr. Adams was born in Durham. He was predeceased by his parents, John S. Adams and Flora Bennett Adams; his brother, Howard; and his sister, Dr. Erma Adams. He graduated from Durham High School in 1942.
An accomplished athlete, Mr. Adams played professional baseball as a center-fielder for the Wilson Tobs in the Coastal Plain League. In October 1942, he married Frances King of Durham. During World War II, Mr. Adams enlisted and served for three years in the South Pacific with the Seventy-Eighth United States Navy Construction Battalion 'Seabees.'
Upon his return, Mr. Adams began a distinguished career of more than 30 years with Sears, Roebuck & Co. He served in various management positions with Sears in Memphis, Tenn.; Bowling Green, Ky.; Huntsville, Ala.; Richmond, Va.; and Nashville.
Committed to each community in which he lived, Mr. Adams enjoyed leadership positions in various civic organizations including Chambers of Commerce, Rotary, Kiwanis Clubs and VFW. Following his career with Sears, Mr. Adams developed commercial properties in the Cool Springs area of Brentwood and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at his lake home in Guntersville, Ala.
He was a member of Brentwood United Methodist Church and the Faith Inquiry Sunday School Class.
Mr. Adams is survived by his wife of almost 68 years, Frances; son, Alfred Jr. and daughter-in-law, Sarah Adams, of Atlanta, GA; daughter, Marsha and son-in-law, Bob Davis, of Columbia, SC; sister and brother-in-law, Jonnie and Tal Smith of Houston, Texas; sister-in-law, Orpah King of Durham; grandchildren, Patrick and Jeff Adams, Ben and Katherine Davis; nieces and nephews, Betty Youman, Brinkley and Ronnie King, and Valerie and Randy Smith.
