Member Of Early Monterey Dead At 96 Years
Another bond linking Monterey of the present with Old Monte¬rey of the Mexican regime was severed by death today, when Senora Dona Maria de Los Angeles Boronda de Pombert died at her residence, 180 Acacia street, Pacific Grove. She was the last surviving member of her generation of the Boronda family and the last of 10 brothers and sisters.
Born 96 years ago next June, on Rancho de Los Laureles, now Rancho Del Monte, Carmel valley, she was believed to have been the first Caucasian child baptized In Carmel mission, where she took her first Holy Communion about 90 years ego.
Until toward the end of her long life her memory was clear and her mind active and, although she shunned publicity and did not care for newspaper interviews, she often told members of her family interesting details of her early life, of trips to Monterey by oxcart and of the long and difficult journeys to San Jose, where wheat was taken to be ground into flour, probably in the mill own¬ed and operated by James Lick founder of Lick observatory.
LIFE IN CASTROVILLE
As a bride she went to Castroville, where her husband, Don Juan Pombert, operated a hotel for a half century. He was a son of Don Louis Pombert, sole survivor of 180 members of an expedition from Canada to Monterey in the early part of the last century. The senior Pombert became the owner of a Spanish grant which comprised the present Bardin ranch and other extensive holdings.
Following the death of her husband in 1919, Mrs. Pombert came to live in Pacific Grove,
FUNERAL THURSDAY
Five daughters and two sons survive: Mrs. Angela Coe of Ogden, Utah; Mrs. Lorena Breen of Oakland; Mrs., Martha Warren of San Francisco; Mrs. Willis Abby of Pacific Grove, and Mrs. Troya Valenzuela of Los Angeles; John Pombert of Pacific Grove, and Thomas Pombert of Monterey. Among the grandchildren are Frances B. Abby and Anita
The body is at the Dorney funeral parlors Monterey, where Rosary will be held at 8 o'clock Wednesday evening. The funeral will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Angela’s Catholic church. Pacific Grove, followed by Interment in the Catholic cemetery at Monterey.
