Sophia was an early feminist, encouraged by her father Francis Dana to fend for herself. She married George Ripley and together they founded Brook Farm, a utopian school focusing on progressive childhood education. They eventually disagreed on certain aspects of philosophy, their marriage becoming strained after about 1850.
