He married Elizabeth C. Eddleman in Arkansas around 1851. They moved to Texas around 1856 and were one of the pioneer families of Parker county. The also lived in Young and Scurry counties. He served in Co. E. of the 19th Regiment Cavalry of the Confederate States from Parker county. Robert and Elizabeth's children were M.A. (female), William A., Thomas R., Jeff D., Robert S., Lydia Z., Susan Ollie, Epsie A., and Louisa F. Byrd. Robert E. Byrd served as a judge of Scurry county from 1890-1892.
