FINAL TRIBUNTES NAPLES SLEIGH

An overflow congregation in Naples Ward Chapel Wednesday at 11 a.m. paid tribute to Mrs. Marva Merrell, 25, a victim of a sleigh-riding mishap on Friday night.

The mother of four was fatally injured when the fast-moving sleigh in which she was the front passenger smashed head-on into a car six miles northeast of Vernal on Diamond Mountain Road.

Mrs. Merrell suffered a basal skull fracture, both legs broken and chest injuries. She received surgery in Uintah County hospital but died at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

INJURED
Also injured in the smashup were Orvil Merrell, the victim's husband, who suffered torn ligaments in his right knee and Mrs. Erma Merrell, her sister, who sustained a fractured right angle.

The Merrells were participating in a Naples Ward sleighing party and their sled was one of the last to make the run down the hill.

The other vehicle in the mishap was a 1954 Chev. sedan driven by Dan H. Richens, 21, of Naples. The site of the accident was a sharp curve on the steep hill.

Mr. Richens told investigating officer Sgt. Sammy Hatch that he had stopped to talk to a group of riders but no one warned him that another sled was approaching.

Sgt. Hatch commented that a law seemed necessary to prohibit coasting on roads unles special precautions were taken.
