Amanda was the daughter of Charles Penn Parrish and Sophrenia (Pope) Parrish. She married James Elbridge Harnest in 1880 in Texas. Between 1882 and 1896, the couple became parents to seven children; Charles E., Lee M., Rose Ann, Minnie, Katie Ione, Elizabeth Ella and Charles Penn Harnest.
