Although his tombstone gives 1877 as his birth year, the Birth records for Carroll Co., VA, and the family Bible give 1878 as his birth year. He and his brother Elwood were twins.

Elbert and Elwood were twins and were actually born in 1878, not 1877, as Elbert later thought.
