Death Notice from "The Saint Paul Globe," dated Sunday, September 21, 1890, page 1:

"INSTANTLY KILLED - A Pipestone Farmer Meets Death in a Peculiar Way

Pipestone, Mn., September 20 - John DeVries, living ten miles north of here, started to town this morning with a wagon with no box on it. He had nearly reached town when the team became frightened and ran away, throwing him to the ground and a plow share he was bringing to have sharpened struck him in the forehead, killing him almost instantly. He leaves a wife and six children, the oldest is only 12 years of age. He was a prominent Hollander and clerk of Fountain Prairie township."
