Civil War Veteran dies at Home in this City After Months of Suffering.

Robert Luke was born in Ohio, June 8, 1839, and died at his home in this city on Thursday after suffering for the past four or five years with a complication of disease and was 72 years, 8 months, and 29 days old at the time of his death. He moved with his parents from Ohio to Washington County, IL where he made his home on a farm for several years and this is where he spent his boyhood days. When a young man, he joined the Army and belonged to Company C Regiment No. 81 Illinois Infantry of Volunteers and served three years after which time he was honorably discharged. After returning from the Army, he lived in Washington County for a few years after which time he moved to this county and has made his home in and around this city for the past 40 years with the except of a short time when he ran a butcher shop and a grocery store in Coulterville.

He had been failing in health for the past four or five years and had completely lost his eye sight. He leaves to mourn besides his wife seven children, two daughters Mrs. W. C. Leming of Hallidayboro, Mrs. H. Longshore of DuQuoin, and five sons, Alexander of DuQuoin, Willard, John, David, and Alva all of this city. Also one sister and two brothers of Nashville besides numerous other relatives and friends. Funeral Services were held at the family residence Saturday afternoon conducted by Rev. Samuel Buchanan after which this kind and loving father and dear brother was laid to rest in I. O. O. F cemetery.
