Philip married Elizabeth Mathilda Rech (1855-1938) on July 29, 1874 by Rev. John G. Wiehle of the German Reformed denomination. He worked as brewer with his father and brother in a business called Philip Guckes' Sons. The brewery was also known as the School Lane Brewery.

"GUCKES - On September 13, 1902, Philip, Jr., son of Sibilla and the late Philip Guckes, in his 50th year. Funeral on Tuesday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, from 809 North Eighth street. Meridian Sun Lodge, No. 158, F. and A. M., is invited to attend. Interment at Mt. Vernon Cemetery."
