J. Grant Baldwin, 92, of Salmon, passed away peacefully due to natural causes 10 July 2010. Baldwin was born 29 March 1918 in Deever, later named Moreland, to George and Theodocia Hatch Baldwin. He was the sixth of eight children. His father gave him the name of J. Grant after the seventh president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His name was always very special to him. He attended Roosevelt Grade School where he participated in numerous sports. He especially enjoyed the game of baseball where he really excelled, winning an American Legion State Championship. Baldwin served in World War II and had many experience that he enjoyed sharing. He was stationed at McDill Field near Tampa, Florida and later transferred to Venice Army Air base where he met Evelyn Futch. He was transferred to the Island of Guam until the end of the War. He was discharged and returned home on Thansgiving day 1945. He returned to Venice and on 30 December 1945, he married Futch. This marriage was solomized in the Idaho Falls Temple on 2 July 1948. The couple made their first home in Moreland where he developed thousands of acres of potato ground out of sage brush. He was also a pioneer in sprinkler irrigation. In 1959 they moved to Pahsimeroi Valley where he was involved in farming, ranching and raising registered horses. They lived there for 30 years. When Baldwin retired in 1989 they moved to Salmon to be near their children. He was an active member of the LDS Church where he served as a member of the Elder's Quorum presidency, Bishopric, High council, Branch presidency, Ward mission leader, Stake missionary and High Priest group leader. He was the last living member of his immediate family. Baldwin is survived by his wife of 64 years, Evelyn Futch Baldwin; sons, Benjamin (Debbie), Myron (Diane), and Dennis (Jennifer), all of Salmon and daughter; Pamela (Wendell) of Mackay; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren as well a numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held 15 July 2010 at the Salmon LDS Stake Center followed by burial in the Salmon Cemetery with military rites.
