Elizabeth M. Strathie of Newtown, Bucks County, a retired physician, died on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2007, at Pickering Manor following hospitalization at St. Mary Medical Center. She was 89.
Dr. Strathie, the very first woman physician in Newtown, was known by her many patients as "Dr. Betty." She was a 1940 graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM), the same institution where her father, stepmother and brother had also received their medical degrees. A spokesman for PCOM expressed a keen sense of loss of Dr. Strathie, "a beloved member of the PCOM community."
In addition to serving her community as a family physician for 63 years, Dr. Strathie was a founding physician of St. Mary Medical Center. Upon the death of Dr. Strathie, Joseph Conroy, M.D., vice president and chief medical officer, St. Mary Medical Center, stated that "as one of the founding physicians of St. Mary, Dr. Elizabeth "Betty" Strathie achieved a distinguished career in medicine. We will miss her and the compassion and care she long provided to our community."
On Sept. 24, 2000, her many contributions to her community and the commitment she had for the health of her patients were recognized when the Mayor of Newtown, Glenn D. Hains, declared that day as "Dr. Elizabeth M. Strathie Day in Newtown Borough." She was awarded a commemorative plague on that day by Mayor Hains during a very successful luncheon fundraiser for the Newtown Library.
Dr. Strathie was also honored by PCOM upon her 50-year anniversary as a physician through the award of a commemorative plaque.
Shortly following her death, Mayor Glenn D. Hains observed that "the Newtown community is saddened to learn of the passing of our beloved Dr. Betty. She was the first woman doctor in Newtown, who had a long career caring for the people of this historic community. What I will personally remember about Dr. Betty is her devotion to her medical practice and the loyalty of her patients to her. She led a full life, caring for her patients, family and her community."
Her four surviving children include, Barbara Gallelli and Thomas Bond, born during her marriage to the late Richard Bond, D.O., also a graduate of PCOM; two additional surviving children include, Susan Mayne, residing in Bath, England, and Gary Strathie. They were born during the marriage of Dr. Strathie to the late James Strathie. Dr. Strathie also was the wife of the late Harry Yerkes. Dr. Strathie also is survived by 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at Newtown Presbyterian Church, 25 N. Chancellor St., Newtown. Interment ceremonies will be held privately.
Donations may be made to Pickering Manor, 226 N. Lincoln Ave., Newtown, PA 18940. Swartz Givnish Funeral Home, Newtown.
