Arab: I am sorry to report the death on the 22nd of our popular young teacher, John W. Hinds. He was a man of fine abilities, loved and respected by both pupils and patrons.

*******************
This handsome young man, John W. Hinds, was fondly known as Johnie. His father was Claiborne Hinds, and his parents lived in Summit, Blount County, Alabama. Johnie was living in Arab, Marshall County, Alabama at the time of his death with his brother, Dr. M.L. Hinds, and he was a teacher in the area. He also had family connections to New Hope, Madison County, Alabama, and several of his relatives are buried at New Hope Cemetery. He was only 21 years old at the time of death.

Though he died April 22, 1898, his death was reported in The Weekly Advertiser (Montgomery, Alabama) on 6 May 1898, Page 6. My grandmother, Nellie Vann Carpenter, and two of her brothers, Ben Vann and Tom Vann, were teachers, and were most likely well acquainted with John W. Hinds.

Rest in peace, Johnie Hinds, and you are not forgotten after all these years. Death came far too soon for such a young man, but you are remembered with love and respect for the accomplishments of your short life.
