He was married first to Harriet Ellis in January 1861 and the marriage is recorded at the Mahaska Co., Courthouse. She died April 1863 at Waitsburg, WA., and likely is one of the unknown burials in the pioneer cemetery that burned.

She gave birth to a son in 1863 and died 8 days later. The story is he was named for the doctors brought in to save her life. She may also have been the mother of another baby girl born in late 1861. One descendant sent me a picture of a young woman he said was Harriet and she was holding a baby girl on her lap.

After Harriet died the baby boy went to live with an Aunt Polly, who was able to breast feed him. When he was 7 years old he went to live with his father nearby.

About 1871, a family named Evans moved next door to Gabe and his head was soon turned by their daughter.Gabriel married Mattie Evans in 1872. They went on to raise a batch of kids and many descendants

Gabe was said to be 'wild' and 'hot tempered' and a hell raiser when it came to politics. It was suggested that researchers look at early Dayton and Waitsburg newspapers for clues. Perhaps a story or two of gun battles and arrests.... all speculation
